IDF Extends Ban on Attack Drones After Fatal Incident

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has extended a ban on the use of attack drones following a fatal incident in which two reservist soldiers were killed. Major General Nadav Lotan, commander of the Ground Forces, decided on Sunday to prolong the suspension of attack drone usage until next Sunday, October 4th, as a precautionary measure. The decision comes after Sergeant Major (Res.) Nadav Kali and Sergeant Major (Res.) Ofek Moalem from the "Jerusalem" Brigade (16) were killed last week when an IDF drone exploded inside a Gaza Strip outpost. According to details released after the event, the soldiers were operating two drones during a mission. The first drone launched successfully, but the second crashed within the outpost. When the soldiers approached the downed drone, it exploded for reasons yet to be determined, leading to their deaths. Following the tragedy, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi ordered the formation of an expert team to investigate the circumstances of the incident. The investigation is examining possibilities including a malfunction or a communication issue with the drone as potential causes for the explosion. The IDF emphasized that the halt in attack drone usage is a preventative safety measure. A decision on whether to resume their use will be made after a situation assessment on Sunday, and brigades will be required to report on their adherence to the directives.
