Israel Extends Ban on Combat Drone Use After Fatal Accident
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have extended a ban on the use of combat drones until October 4. The prohibition was initially imposed following the deaths of two reservists in the Gaza Strip due to an operational accident.
On September 24, an "Atalef" type combat drone crashed at a military post in northern Gaza and exploded as soldiers approached. The incident resulted in the deaths of reservists Nadav Kali and Ofek Mualem. The initial suspension of combat drone usage was for 48 hours.
Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir has ordered the formation of a special commission to investigate the circumstances of the incident. The commission will be led by a ground forces brigadier general.
The investigation is focusing on a potential technical malfunction of the drone, the arming system of its warhead, and the reason for its explosion after crashing.
