IDF Investigates Drone Explosion Killing Two Reservists in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has released new details regarding the tragic deaths of two reservist soldiers in the Gaza Strip, who were killed by an explosion from an "Atalef" (Bat) drone. The soldiers, identified as 24-year-old Staff Sergeant Nadav Kali from Har Halutz and 23-year-old Staff Sergeant Ofek Moualem from Jerusalem, were serving in the 7007th Battalion of the 16th Division.

An initial military investigation suggests the incident was an internal operational mishap, with senior IDF officers officially denying any possibility of Hamas involvement. They stated that terrorist groups lack the technical capability to intercept or remotely hack such drones. Preliminary findings indicate the drone crashed during a relaunch attempt, possibly striking an overhead obstacle like an electrical wire or pole on the base. Experienced operators noted the flight failure when the camera feed abruptly stopped and the drone fell onto a shelter.

Following the crash, soldiers followed standard safety protocols by disconnecting the control unit. The drone's technical specifications indicate its warhead should not detonate when the unit is disconnected. However, for reasons yet undetermined, the safety mechanism failed. The fatal error occurred when soldiers attempted to move the downed drone themselves instead of calling professional sappers. As they were carrying it, the drone unexpectedly exploded, resulting in their deaths.

This incident highlights the issue of non-combat casualties within the IDF. Since the start of the large-scale operation in Gaza, 82 Israeli soldiers have died in accidents and technical failures. This brings the total number of fallen soldiers in the enclave to 474, with operational incidents accounting for approximately 17% of all losses.
