Continuous Gunfire in Rahat Prompts Resident Fears, Police Arrests

Intense gunfire was heard around the Bedouin city of Rahat in the northern Negev on Saturday, with residents reporting the shooting began overnight and intensified significantly by early morning. Residents of the nearby community of Givat Bar described the sounds as resembling "volleys of automatic weapons" and some likened the intensity to the events of October 7th, expressing growing fear and frustration.

Residents have complained about ongoing shooting incidents for about a week, stating that their calls to the police have resulted in assurances of patrols but no clear identification of the source of the gunfire. The head of Givat Bar expressed concern over the security situation, noting that residents lack the authority to call local emergency teams, leaving them feeling vulnerable. She added that the repeated gunfire has fueled fears of armed individuals being present within or near the community.

Frustrated by the perceived lack of effective response, Givat Bar residents have threatened to form their own local response team to investigate the source of the shooting if the situation does not improve. The community leader stated that residents "are done waiting" and may take independent action to investigate the gunfire, both inside and outside their town.

In response to the incidents, police announced the arrest of two suspects on Saturday morning for questioning, in addition to three others apprehended in recent days. During these operations, authorities seized several weapons, including handguns, an M16 rifle, and ammunition magazines. Police stated that their forces in Rahat are continuing operations in the area to address the shooting reports and investigate their origins.
