Police Arrest Five Amidst Ongoing Gunfire in Rahat

Continuous gunfire echoed through and around the city of Rahat over the weekend and into Saturday morning, stemming from ongoing disputes between families. In response, police apprehended five suspects believed to be involved in the shootings. During the operation, authorities seized two handguns, an M-16 rifle, ammunition magazines, and hundreds of bullets.

Despite the police action, residents of Rahat and surrounding communities described the situation as routine, expressing deep distress over the persistent crime in the area. "It's already the norm," residents sadly stated.

The Southern District Police and the Sahar Unit, operating under a task force in Rahat, are actively combating illegal weapons possession, shootings, and violence to protect citizens. Police Commander of Rahat Station, Superintendent Yona Yitzhak, affirmed the station's "determined and zero-tolerance approach" to these offenses, highlighting the task force's role in concentrating forces for targeted operational responses and proactive weapon seizures. "We will continue to act decisively to thwart shooting and violence incidents, prevent harm to human life, and strengthen the security of the city's residents," he added.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of escalating crime within the Arab community in Israel. Earlier on Saturday, Muhammad Samer Yassin was shot and killed in Tamra, located in the local council of Kaaboul in the Western Galilee. His cousin, Jawad Yassin, was murdered in February of the previous year. Police are investigating the Tamra shooting as a criminal incident. So far this year, 177 people have been murdered within the Arab community in Israel.
