Supreme Court to Hear Appeal on Balad Chairman Sami Abushahadeh's Disqualification
Israel's Supreme Court will convene on Thursday at 11:30 AM to hear the appeal filed by Balad party chairman Sami Abushahadeh against his disqualification from running in the upcoming Knesset elections. The hearing will be conducted by an expanded panel of nine justices, including President Isaac Amit, Daphne Barak-Erez, David Mintz, Yael Willner, Ofer Grosskopf, Alex Stein, Gila Kenfy-Steinitz, Khaled Kabub, and Yechiel Kasher.
Abushahadeh was disqualified by the Central Elections Committee last Wednesday. In an unusual move, the committee's chairman, Justice Noam Sohlberg, announced he would participate in the vote on the disqualification, citing the "grave matters" heard during the proceedings. Sohlberg stated that Abushahadeh's justifications were unsatisfactory and did not provide a logical explanation for a "shocking post" written on October 8th.
The Central Elections Committee's decision to disqualify Abushahadeh was made due to his alleged support for terrorism and incitement, particularly in light of a post he published following the October 7th Hamas attacks.
