Charity Donor Distributes Millions in Cash to Thousands in Jerusalem

Thousands of people flocked to Strauss Street in Jerusalem on Friday morning, the eve of the Sukkot holiday, to receive cash envelopes from philanthropist Rabbi Yoeli Landau. The large crowd, gathered outside the 'Or Hachaim' Torah hall, caused the street to be blocked to traffic.

An announcement had been made the previous evening regarding a distribution in memory of the 'Dovrei Chaim' of Sanz, to take place between 7:00 and 9:00 AM for married yeshiva students (avreichim) after their weddings. Indeed, from the early morning hours, a multitude gathered at the location.

Landau distributed envelopes containing 1,220 shekels each, with approximately 6,000 individuals receiving holiday grants and financial assistance. The envelopes were marked 'Shfa Yoel Distribution.'

While some social media users criticized the nature of the distribution and the resulting overcrowding, Landau's associates clarified that the event followed an organized and customary format similar to practices in the United States. They explained that Landau typically provides significant financial support to those in need for two hours every Friday at his synagogue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This Jerusalem distribution was intended to assist Israeli avreichim with holiday expenses, enabling them to celebrate with dignity.

His representatives further stated that Landau secretly distributes tens of millions of shekels monthly to needy individuals' bank accounts. The decision to conduct this public distribution without prior lists was made early in the week, leading to the chosen method of distribution.
