Thousands Flock to Charity Distribution by Wealthy Donor

Thousands of ultra-Orthodox men, known as avrechim, flocked to the Orayta yeshiva building in Jerusalem on Thursday to receive a charitable donation of 1,200 shekels (approximately $325) from wealthy donor Yoeli Landau.

The distribution, intended for married avrechim, saw massive crowds gather, leading to significant traffic disruptions in the area. Police were present to manage the crowds and maintain order. Public transportation routes, specifically bus lines serving Strauss Street, were rerouted due to the congestion.

Landau, a prominent figure in the ultra-Orthodox community, has a history of conducting large-scale charitable distributions, particularly around Jewish holidays. This event highlights the significant financial needs within some segments of the ultra-Orthodox community and the role of private philanthropy in addressing them.

The sheer volume of attendees underscores the economic challenges faced by many families relying on stipends for Torah study. The event concluded without major incident, though the logistical challenges of managing such large gatherings remain a recurring theme in similar distributions.
