Netanyahu Criticized for UN Speech on Qatar's Role

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent speech at the United Nations General Assembly has drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures, particularly regarding his stance on Qatar. Naftali Bennett, chairman of the Yamina party, accused Netanyahu of missing a "historic opportunity" to declare Qatar an enemy state and expose its alleged involvement in the October 7th attacks. Bennett argued that by failing to directly label Qatar as an adversary, Netanyahu was "whitewashing and legitimizing" the nation, whose hands he described as "stained with the blood of our people." He further asserted that Qatar's funding of Hamas, celebration of the attacks, and hosting of Hamas leaders, coupled with ongoing anti-Israel propaganda, makes it an enemy that must be confronted.

Bennett elaborated that Qatar's support is essential for Hamas's operations, stating, "Without Qatar, there is no Hamas." He criticized Netanyahu for allegedly giving Qatar control over Gaza's future, which Bennett believes has prevented Israel from decisively defeating Hamas for three years. Bennett vowed that his party would declare Qatar an enemy, expel it from Israel and Gaza, and defeat Hamas.

Yair Golan, chairman of the Democrats party, also reacted to Netanyahu's speech, expressing surprise at the Prime Minister's accusations against Qatar for spreading lies and hosting Hamas officials on October 7th. Golan suggested that Netanyahu's remarks might not have been coordinated, humorously noting, "Apparently the speech was not coordinated with Yonatan Urikh."

In his UN address, Netanyahu himself spoke about a "ninth front" in the war, which he identified as the battle for truth waged in global media and social networks. He stated that "foreign countries" have invested vast sums to spread falsehoods, specifically targeting Qatar. Netanyahu accused Qatar of initiating this campaign decades ago by funding American universities and media outlets like Al Jazeera, and later expanding into Europe with the aim of indoctrinating young people to hate Israel, America, and the West.
