Netanyahu Criticized for UN Speech on Qatar's Role

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced sharp criticism from opposition figures following his address at the United Nations General Assembly. Naftali Bennett, leader of the Together party, accused Netanyahu of missing a "historic opportunity" to declare Qatar an enemy state and expose its alleged involvement in the October 7th Hamas attacks. Bennett argued that by failing to directly name Qatar as an adversary, Netanyahu was "whitewashing and legitimizing" the nation, which he described as an "enemy whose hands are stained with the massacre of our people." Bennett further asserted that Qatar's funding of Hamas and its alleged anti-Israel propaganda undermine national security and Israel's global standing.

Bennett elaborated on his criticism, stating, "Without Qatar, there is no Hamas." He claimed that Netanyahu's inability to decisively defeat Hamas over the past three years stems from giving Qatar leverage over Gaza. Bennett vowed that his party would declare Qatar an enemy, expel it from Israel and Gaza, and defeat Hamas.

Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats party, also reacted to Netanyahu's speech, expressing surprise at the Prime Minister's accusations against Qatar for spreading lies and hosting senior Hamas officials on October 7th. Golan suggested that Netanyahu's speech might not have been coordinated with his staff, referencing Jonathan Uriach.

In his UN address, Netanyahu did accuse unnamed foreign countries of investing vast sums to spread lies, particularly through global media and social networks. He specifically targeted Qatar, alleging it began decades ago by funding American universities and "toxic media channels like Al Jazeera," with the aim of indoctrinating young people to hate Israel, America, and the West. Netanyahu framed this as a "war for truth" in the ongoing conflict.
