Israel Police’s Lahav 433 national fraud unit, YAHAM, detained a head of a local authority this morning for questioning on suspicion of involvement in public corruption. The move followed a covert investigation based on information received by the unit, which was converted into an open probe today.
As part of the operation, investigators searched homes and the local authority’s offices, and several other senior officials in the authority were summoned for questioning. At the same time, enforcement and investigative activity was taking place from the morning at several sites within the council’s jurisdiction.
The investigation is being led by YAHAM with cooperation from several enforcement and oversight bodies, each acting within its own area of responsibility. Those involved include the Civil Administration, the Israel Tax Authority, Israel Electric Corporation, the Civil Prosecution, and the Israel Land Enforcement Authority.
Police said the probe is still in its early stages and that additional actions are expected.
