Philadelphia Teacher Admits Decades-Long Deception About Jewish and Israeli Identity

A long-time teacher in Philadelphia, Hannah Gaan, has confessed to fabricating her identity for years, presenting herself as Palestinian, Tunisian, and Black. Gaan, who taught at Workshop School in West Philadelphia and was known for her anti-Israel activism, revealed in a video statement that she is actually a white Jewish woman, the daughter of Israeli settlers.

Her deception reportedly involved using makeup and adopting an Afro-American style to conceal her true background. The confession came after a confrontation with activists from pro-Palestinian organizations she was associated with, who questioned her about her origins. After over an hour of discussion, she admitted to lying about her identity.

In her apology video, Gaan expressed shame, stating, "I have hidden the truth or outright lied about my background to every single person in my life." She acknowledged being "a white woman with significant privilege and wealth."

The revelation has caused significant backlash among activists who knew her. Several organizations have issued statements expressing shock, sadness, and anger over the "betrayal," declaring they will no longer work with her. The Philadelphia School District acknowledged the online reports concerning Gaan and her external activities, stating they are aware of the situation. The district has offered support to students and staff but has not commented on whether Gaan will face disciplinary action.
