Activist Exposed for Falsely Claiming Palestinian Heritage, Jewish Roots

An American activist, Hannah Gwan, has been embroiled in controversy after it was revealed she is a white Jewish woman, not of Palestinian descent as she had claimed for years. Gwan, a teacher from Philadelphia, presented herself as a prominent advocate for Black and Palestinian rights, alleging a Palestinian grandfather and financial struggles due to sending money to her family.

Her deception unraveled when acquaintances revealed her true identity, noting she was known as a white Jewish woman whose family lives in Israeli settlements. Reports indicate she altered her appearance, darkened her skin with makeup and tanning, and adopted African American Vernacular English to support her false narrative. She has been compared to Rachel Dolezal, the white activist who posed as Black.

Two organizations Gwan was involved with, the Racial Justice Organizing Committee (RJOC) and Philadelphians for Education and Justice for Palestine (PEJP), expelled her upon the revelation. They stated Gwan betrayed and appropriated the struggles of Palestinians and the Black community, demanding she publicly acknowledge her Israeli settler family background.

Local educator Sharif El-Mekki clarified that the anger stems from Gwan's deception, not her Jewish faith. He noted Gwan has the privilege to apologize and return to her privileged life, unlike Palestinians and Black individuals who cannot shed their identities when facing consequences.

Gwan has since posted an apology video on Instagram admitting to hiding her truth. However, she used the platform to continue criticizing Israel, stating her lies do not invalidate the urgency of listening to voices from the ground reporting on an ongoing genocide.
