IDF Deploys Reserve Division to West Bank Amid Security Concerns Before Holidays

The Israeli military has decided to activate the 98th Reserve Division in the West Bank, a move described as unusual, in response to a severe attack at the Beit El checkpoint on Route 443 where a reservist was seriously wounded. The division will assume command over the Judea and Gush Etzion brigades.

This decision stems from concerns within the security establishment that the recent attack may signal an escalation in the frequency and severity of terror incidents in the region, particularly with the upcoming Jewish holidays of Sukkot and Simchat Torah approaching. The IDF stated the deployment aims to strengthen command and control, enhancing defensive and offensive capabilities in the area.

Previously, a single regular division commanded all six regional brigades in the West Bank. With the 98th Division's activation, it will oversee the southern sector of the West Bank, allowing the commander of the West Bank division to focus on reinforcing forces and addressing threats in other parts of the territory.

Simultaneously, the security apparatus is preparing for the intermediate days of Sukkot, a period expected to see thousands of Israelis visiting heritage sites and locations throughout the West Bank. The IDF and security forces are continuing operational activities, including counter-terrorism infrastructure operations and arrests in the region.

The deployment of the 98th Division is part of a series of measures taken recently in response to a string of security incidents in the West Bank.
