Israel's National Football Team Faces High Expectations with Star-Studded Foreign-Based Players

Following a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign marked by a porous defense and significant losses, the Israeli national football team is entering the upcoming Nations League with a significantly improved squad. The team boasts an impressive roster of players based in top European leagues, leading to natural expectations of success and a potential path to Euro 2028.

In contrast to the previous campaign, where Israel had one of Europe's weakest defenses, the current squad features 14 players playing abroad. These include Anan Khalaili at Premier League club Crystal Palace, Roy Revivo at Spanish side Elche, and Omri Gandelman at Italian club Lecce. Additionally, several players compete in England's highly competitive second division, such as Manor Solomon at West Ham and Daniel Peretz at Southampton, alongside Oscar Gloukh at Dutch giant Ajax.

The success of Israel's youth teams, including a third-place finish at the U-20 World Cup and a fourth-place finish at the U-21 European Championship, has contributed to this export of talent. The defense is now largely comprised of foreign-based players, with only Raz Shlomo and Eidan Nahmias called up due to injuries.
