Israel National Football Team Faces Defensive Crisis Ahead of Nations League Opener

The Israeli national football team is grappling with a severe shortage of central defenders for their upcoming UEFA Nations League match against Austria. Idan Nahmias, a key defender from Hapoel Be'er Sheva, is in doubt for the game due to calf muscle pain, requiring further imaging.

This potential absence leaves the team with only three natural central defenders: Nikita Stoyanov, Raz Shlomo, and Noam Stieffman. While Eliahu Dasa and Guy Mzrahi could potentially fill in, it would likely require a formation change to a three-man defense, a tactical shift the national team coach is reportedly hesitant to employ for the first match.

"We hope Idan will be fit, it's a dry blow but he is in pain," stated members of the delegation. The team's physiotherapy and medical staff, including Dr. Udi Kaufman, are working to get Nahmias ready given the critical lack of available defenders.

The squad observed Yom Kippur according to tradition. The remaining players, including foreign-based professionals like Tai Baribo, Liel Abada, Dor Turgeman, Ilai Feingold, and Idan Toklomati from the US, are expected to join the team two days before the match. Gabi Kanyukovsky will arrive in Hungary on Friday, and Eitan Azulai, who is getting married this week, will join the delegation next week.
