Israel National Football Team Faces Defensive Crisis Ahead of Austria Match

The Israeli national football team is facing a severe shortage of central defenders ahead of their upcoming Nations League match against Austria. Idan Nahmias, a defender for Hapoel Be'er Sheva, is in doubt for the game after experiencing pain in his calf muscle, requiring him to undergo imaging.

This injury leaves the team with only three natural central defenders available: Nikita Stoyanov, Raz Shlomo, and Noam Steifman. While Eli Dasa and Guy Mizrahi could potentially play in a central defensive role if the team opts for a three-man backline, this formation is reportedly not favored by the national coach for the initial encounter.

Despite the setback, the team's physiotherapy staff and team doctor, Dr. Udi Kaufman, are working to get Nahmias fit for the match. The team observed Yom Kippur and is expecting the arrival of additional players, including foreign-based legionnaires from the USA such as Tai Baribo, Liel Abada, Dor Turgeman, Ilai Feingold, and Idan Toklomati, the day before the game.

Other players joining the squad include Gabi Kanikovsky, who will land in Hungary on Friday, and Eitan Azulai, who is scheduled to arrive next week after his wedding. The groom, Harry Shabat, will also depart to join the delegation.
