Chinese-Made Pool Cleaner Recalled by for Overheating and Fire Risk

Metronix is recalling its new Niya Aquasweep S10 cordless pool cleaner due to a potential safety hazard. The manufacturer discovered that some units may develop cracks in their casing, allowing water to enter the motor unit. This could lead to short circuits, overheating, and in extreme cases, ignition and fire. Metronix has instructed customers to immediately stop using and charging the affected devices.

Notably, the recalled product was manufactured in China by Hongkong Yimu Technology Limited / Lydsto, a departure from Metronix's traditional manufacturing base in northern Israel. While Metronix does utilize a global supply chain for components, its core production, including electronics, part injection, assembly, and packaging of its well-known Dolphin robots, takes place in Yizrael and Dalton, Israel.

The Aquasweep S10 is part of Metronix's newer Niya brand, aimed at the mid-range wireless pool cleaner market and representing the company's entry into the hand-held cleaner category. This segment is seen as a growing market for consumers who prefer manual cleaning or spot cleaning of smaller water features like jacuzzis and spas. The S10 was priced at 979 shekels in Israel.

The recall comes at a difficult time for Metronix, which saw its revenue drop by approximately 15% to 437.5 million shekels in the second quarter, resulting in a loss of 8 million shekels. For the first half of the year, revenue fell by about 13% to 747 million shekels, with a total loss of 35 million shekels. The company is also in discussions with FIMI Opportunity Funds regarding a potential investment that could alter its ownership structure.

Metronix is advising customers to keep the recalled device in a dry, ventilated area away from children and flammable materials while awaiting pickup. The company will provide a refund or appropriate compensation. The recall was coordinated with the Economy Ministry's Standardization Authority.
