Tavernier explained his unconventional approach to penalties, stating that he developed a unique style after extensive practice. He believes his running approach makes it difficult for goalkeepers to anticipate his shots. "I always run, no matter how I kick the ball," he said, emphasizing the need for continuous training to ensure accuracy.

Prior to this match, Tavernier had a strong record, converting 77 out of 97 penalties (79%), slightly above the average. He acknowledged the pressure involved in taking penalties but attributed his success to technique and powerful kicks, even when the ball doesn't go exactly as planned. This was the 21st penalty Tavernier has missed in his career, but the first time he has successfully converted the rebound.
