Maccabi Tel Aviv's James Tavernier scored the go-ahead goal in his team's 2-1 victory over Netanya on Saturday, marking a unique moment in his career. After missing a penalty kick, Tavernier was able to score from the rebound, a scenario he described as "unconventional" but ultimately successful.

Dor Peretz, who had scored the first penalty of the match, ceded his opportunity to the Scottish player. Tavernier explained his approach to taking penalties, noting that he developed his technique through extensive practice. "I created a unique style for myself, it's hard for goalkeepers to read me," he stated, emphasizing his consistent running approach regardless of how he strikes the ball.

Tavernier, who had previously converted 77 out of 97 penalties (79% success rate), acknowledged the pressure involved but highlighted his technique and powerful shots. This particular instance was the 21st penalty he had missed in his career, but for the first time, he managed to score from the subsequent rebound.

He recalled his time at Rangers, where Kenny Miller was the primary penalty taker. Tavernier pushed himself to take on the responsibility, dedicating significant training to master the skill. He believes his method makes him difficult for opposing goalkeepers to anticipate.
