Nine Israelis Arrested in Turkey in Massive Billion-Dollar Fraud Scheme

Turkish authorities have arrested nine Israeli citizens as part of a large-scale operation targeting an international fraud network suspected of defrauding investors out of billions of dollars. The operation, announced by the Turkish Justice Minister, led to the detention of 201 individuals out of 248 suspects, including 45 foreign nationals.

According to Turkish officials, the scheme involved companies posing as investment firms that lured victims through social media advertisements promising lucrative returns on foreign exchange and cryptocurrency investments. Participants were allegedly recruited through fake job postings, trained, and given codenames before being tasked with convincing unsuspecting investors to transfer funds.

Initial investigations suggest the suspects operated call centers that defrauded individuals who registered after seeing the ads. Victims were reportedly first asked to pay a small registration fee, followed by larger sums transferred to offshore accounts and crypto wallets under the guise of investment. The fraudsters then presented fabricated investment tracking screens showing profits or losses based on market conditions.

When victims attempted to withdraw their funds, their accounts were allegedly blocked, and they were pressured to pay additional fees for account unblocking or taxes, with no funds ever returned and contact severed. Turkish authorities estimate the total value of transactions involved in the fraud reached 13 billion Turkish Lira (approximately $800 million USD) over two years, with illegal profits exceeding $3 billion USD. These funds were reportedly used for operational expenses and salaries.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed it received reports of the arrests and is actively working to ensure the rights of the detained Israeli citizens are upheld.
