Israel Wins Wheelchair Tennis World Championship Bronze
The Israeli wheelchair tennis team secured a bronze medal in the Quad division at the World Championships held in the United States. The team achieved a dramatic 2-1 victory over Chile to claim the medal.
The Israeli roster included Noam Gershoni, a Paralympic gold medalist from London 2012, Guy Sasson, a medalist from the Paris 2024 Games and ranked third globally, and Roei Abergil. Assi Stokul coached the team.
In the decisive matches, Gershoni lost his singles match to Diego Perez 6-4, 7-5. Guy Sasson then defeated Francisco Cayulef 6-1, 6-2, tying the overall score at 1-1. The doubles match saw Sasson and Gershoni triumph over Perez and Cayulef 6-1, 6-3, clinching the bronze medal for Israel.
The men's open division team, featuring Adam Berdichevsky, Sergey Lisov, and Amiti Argaman, finished ninth after a 2-0 loss to the USA and a 2-0 win against Chile. Ofer Sala coached this team.
This year's championship marked the 50th anniversary of wheelchair tennis. The delegation head, Kobi Wiener, a co-founder of the sport in Israel, recalled its origins and its integration into the International Tennis Federation in 2000. The sport arrived in Israel in 2004, with early pioneers like Shraga Weinberg and Boaz Kramer becoming Paralympic medalists by the 2008 Beijing Games.
