Israel Wins Wheelchair Tennis World Championship Bronze

The Israeli wheelchair tennis team secured a bronze medal in the Quad division at the World Championships held in the United States. The team clinched the medal after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Chile.

The Israeli roster included Noam Gershoni, a Paralympic gold medalist from London 2012, who returned to competition to aid the team, Guy Sasson, a medalist from the Paris 2024 Games and currently ranked third in the world, and Roei Abergil. Asi Stokul coached the team.

In the opening match, Gershoni lost to Diego Perez 6-4, 7-5. Guy Sasson then faced Francisco Cayulef in a match interrupted by weather conditions. Sasson won decisively, 6-1, 6-2, leveling the overall score to 1-1.

The deciding match was the doubles, where Sasson and Gershoni defeated Perez and Cayulef 6-1, 6-3, completing the comeback and securing the bronze medal for Israel.

Meanwhile, the men's Open division team, featuring Adam Berdichevsky, Sergey Lisov, and Amit Argov, finished ninth. They lost 2-0 to the USA and defeated Chile 2-0. Ofer Sala coached this team.

This year's championship marked the 50th anniversary of wheelchair tennis. The delegation head, Kobi Wiener, recalled the sport's inception and its integration into the International Tennis Federation in 2000. The sport arrived in Israel in 2004, with early pioneers like Shraga Weinberg and Boaz Kramer becoming Paralympic medalists by the 2008 Beijing Games.
