Skoda Launches the Electric Epiq SUV, Aiming for Value and Practicality
Skoda has introduced the Epiq, a new all-electric compact SUV that aims to offer practicality and value, positioned as the electric equivalent of the Kamiq. This launch comes as the Volkswagen Group, Skoda's parent company, undergoes a strategic reorganization in its electric vehicle division after significant investments. The Epiq is built on the upgraded MEB+ platform, marking Skoda's first front-wheel-drive electric vehicle. While it retains a 400-volt architecture, the platform features an improved charging curve and battery cooling for faster charging.
The Epiq measures 4.17 meters in length with a 2.60-meter wheelbase, placing it in the B-segment for electric SUVs. Its design follows Skoda's "Modern Solid" language, featuring a clean exterior with a deep grille, a horizontal window line, and black body cladding for a rugged look. The interior is functional, with a dashboard made of semi-soft materials and a 13-inch infotainment screen running an Android-based system. Despite its compact exterior, the Epiq offers a generous 475-liter cargo space due to the relocation of drivetrain components to the front, allowing for a lower-profile rear suspension.
Skoda is offering the Epiq in three powertrain configurations. The base '35' model features a 37 kWh battery, offering a range of 310 km and 116 horsepower. The '40' variant shares the same battery and range but has a more powerful 135 horsepower motor. The '55' model, considered most relevant for markets like Israel, comes with a larger 52 kWh battery, providing a range of 441 km and a more potent 211 horsepower motor, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 7.1 seconds.
During initial drives on German and Austrian roads, the Epiq demonstrated sharp and precise handling, with strong regenerative braking capabilities. The vehicle exhibited good energy efficiency, maintaining a significant charge after extended driving. Its suspension provided accurate damping, and the steering was precise, contributing to a confident driving experience. However, wind noise was noticeable at higher speeds, and the "First Edition" trim's 20-inch wheels impacted ride comfort.
Safety features are comprehensive, though adaptive cruise control is an optional extra. The vehicle has not yet been tested by Euro NCAP, but its platform-mates have achieved a five-star rating. Skoda emphasizes the Epiq's lack of "trash tech" common in some Chinese EVs, focusing instead on efficiency, driving dynamics, and a well-executed interior suitable for young families. Key questions remain regarding the final equipment packages and pricing for the Israeli market, with deliveries expected in January 2027.
