Skoda Elroq: European Electric Crossover Priced at $41,000?
Skoda is launching the Elroq, a new electric crossover positioned as a smaller and more affordable alternative to its larger siblings, the Enyaq and the Elroq. The Elroq aims to compete with Chinese electric vehicles like the BYD Atto 2 and Kia EV2, with an estimated starting price of around 150,000 shekels (approximately $41,000 USD). This pricing strategy, if maintained in Israel, could offer European electric vehicle buyers a more accessible option.
The Elroq shares its platform with the Volkswagen ID. Cross and Cupra Raval, manufactured together in Spain to reduce costs. It measures 4.17 meters in length, slightly smaller than the Kamiq, but boasts a larger trunk and comparable interior space due to its efficient electric vehicle design. The exterior features an enclosed front end with LED lighting and integrated bumper vents, reminiscent of the larger Skoda Elroq.
Inside, the Elroq offers a user-friendly cabin with a 13-inch central touchscreen supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster. It retains physical controls for some functions, including climate control, though full control from these buttons is not available. The interior utilizes recycled materials, and Skoda encourages owners to 3D-print custom interior accessories, a feature that could potentially extend to replacement parts.
The Israeli version will feature a 55 kWh battery (52 kWh usable) offering an estimated combined range of 441 kilometers. Real-world testing yielded approximately 350 kilometers. Performance is brisk, with the 211 horsepower electric motor accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 7.1 seconds. Charging capabilities include 11 kW AC and 105 kW DC fast charging.
In terms of driving dynamics, the Elroq is praised for its comfortable ride and composed handling, especially on European roads, with suspension tuned for good body control. The steering is precise, though lacking in road feel. While the range is considered adequate but not exceptional, the Elroq's overall package of practicality, design, and driving experience makes it a strong contender, particularly if it can maintain its competitive pricing against Chinese rivals.
