BMW Unveils Advanced Electric IX3 50 Crossover with Impressive Range and Features
Last month, BMW announced plans to cut thousands of jobs by the end of 2027, marking a significant shift for the Munich-based automaker, which recently ranked fourth on Forbes' list of Best Employers in the World for 2025. This move reflects broader challenges facing the German automotive industry, including fierce competition from low-cost Chinese manufacturers, high U.S. import tariffs on European cars, rising energy costs since the Gulf War, strict EU environmental regulations, and heavy investments in electric vehicle development that have yet to pay off.
To address these challenges, BMW is launching a new series of sophisticated electric models, starting with the latest generation of the IX3 crossover. Unlike its predecessor, which was essentially an electric version of the gasoline-powered X3, the new IX3 features a futuristic design with a compact grille illuminated by LED lights, large trapezoidal wheel arches, and a spacious, modern interior. The cabin offers premium materials, extensive standard luxury features including leather upholstery, massage seats, advanced sound systems, and comprehensive driver assistance technologies such as autonomous parking.
The IX3 50 model, currently the only version available, boasts a powerful dual-motor setup producing 469 horsepower, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds. It is equipped with a large 109 kWh battery, delivering an official WLTP range of up to 801 km, with real-world tests showing over 550 km even with maximum air conditioning. The vehicle supports ultra-fast 400 kW charging, reducing downtime at public stations. Despite its 2.36-ton weight and advanced technology, the IX3 maintains BMW's hallmark driving dynamics, offering sharp handling and strong road grip, though ride comfort can be firm on rough roads, especially with the test model's 22-inch wheels.
Priced competitively at 490,000 shekels in Israel, the IX3 presents a compelling option in the luxury electric crossover segment, ahead of expected lower-cost Chinese competitors in the coming years. It competes with models like the Audi Q6 e-tron Quattro, priced at 540,000 shekels with a 561 km range, and the Mercedes EQ GLC300, starting at 499,000 shekels with a 616 km range. BMW’s new IX3 stands out for its combination of range, performance, and premium features, signaling the brand’s forward-looking approach in the evolving electric vehicle market.
