Volvo’s EX60 Debuts as a Sophisticated New Electric Flagship
Volvo has unveiled the EX60, a new all-electric crossover that will compete with premium German SUVs such as the BMW iX3, Audi Q6 and Mercedes GLC. The model is expected to cost about 400,000 shekels and, unlike the XC60 that remains on sale in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, the EX60 is meant to become Volvo’s electric volume seller. Production will take place in both China and Sweden, and the car is due in Israel by the end of the year.
The EX60 is the first Volvo built on the new dedicated SPA3 electric platform and the brand’s first model to use giga casting, large cast aluminum structures designed to reduce production time and costs. Volvo also leans on its safety heritage, recalling that it introduced the three-point seat belt in 1959, and now says the EX60 adjusts belt tension using seat-weight sensors and interior cameras. The car is still awaiting Euro NCAP testing, expected later this year, and Volvo would view anything below five stars as a disappointment.
The cabin is restrained and practical rather than flashy. It gets a 15-inch central screen, an 11.4-inch digital driver display, physical controls for several functions, Google software with Maps and Gemini AI, and a large amount of recycled material. Some controls are less intuitive, especially the climate system and wiper stalk, but the review praised the ergonomics overall less than the EX30 and said the vehicle feels solid and distinctly Swedish.
Three powertrains will be offered: the rear-wheel-drive P6 with 374 horsepower, an 83 kWh battery and 620 km of claimed range; the dual-motor P10 with 510 hp, a 95 kWh battery and 660 km; and the top P12 with 680 hp, a 117 kWh battery and 810 km. Charging reaches 22 kW on AC and up to 400 kW on DC, enough for about 320 km in 10 minutes and a full charge in 18 minutes. The review’s test cars returned about 20% less range than the official figures, though driving impressions were strong, with quick acceleration, calm handling, excellent adaptive cruise control and standard active safety systems. A Cross Country version with air suspension and 2 cm more ground clearance was also shown.
