BMW iX3 Electric SUV Review: A Bold Step Into the Future
The BMW iX3 electric SUV has undergone a significant overhaul, marking a new era for the Bavarian automaker's electric vehicle lineup, dubbed "NEUE KLASSE." This platform introduces advancements across the board, including new battery technology, powertrains, user interfaces, and driver assistance systems.
On the exterior, the iX3 presents a bold and distinctive design, featuring a striking front end with integrated lighting and a black grille, complemented by a dramatic rear with long taillights and aggressive styling. While the front and rear are assertive, the overall silhouette remains a more conventional SUV shape, suggesting a balance between avant-garde design and market familiarity.
Inside, the cabin is a departure from traditional layouts, highlighted by a large, trapezoidal 17.9-inch central touchscreen and a unique, wide, thin display strip projected onto the lower part of the windshield, offering a more efficient and safer way to view information. The interior boasts high-quality materials and excellent build quality, though the user interface, while redesigned, can be complex and require extensive menu navigation for basic functions. The seats are noted for their comfort, and the vehicle offers ample space for passengers and a generous 520-liter cargo capacity, with an additional 58-liter front trunk.
Driving the iX3 reveals a comfortable and refined experience, with a classic German suspension setup that effectively smooths out road imperfections. Noise insulation is also a strong point, creating a quiet cabin. The vehicle is available in two main versions, the 40 and 50, with various optional equipment packages. The tested 50 M-Sport Pro model was heavily equipped, including a 3D head-up display, massage seats, a premium Harman Kardon sound system, and advanced safety features that have shown improved semi-autonomous capabilities.
Performance is impressive, particularly in the 50 variant, which utilizes dual electric motors (synchronous and asynchronous) to deliver strong acceleration, achieving 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Despite its substantial weight of 2,360 kg, the iX3 handles well, offering precise and predictable road manners, though its weight does lead to noticeable body roll during rapid directional changes. The battery capacity is a substantial 108.7 kWh (net), but the real-world range in testing was around 500 km, significantly less than the manufacturer's claimed 740-800 km, with a notable portion of energy consumption attributed to climate control.
While the iX3 impresses with its technology, innovation, and driving dynamics within the electric SUV segment, its high price point, starting at approximately 435,000 shekels and reaching over 530,000 shekels for the tested model, positions it as a premium offering for a select clientele.
