Prisoner's Humiliating Transfer Sparks Outrage and Legal Action

A video documenting the humiliating transfer of murder suspect Agam Zarfati has sparked widespread criticism and legal action. The footage, which shows Zarfati being escorted by masked guards with tactical gear, was released a day after she filed a petition against the Israel Prison Service (IPS) over her detention conditions. The video, accompanied by the caption "Receiving treatment like a terrorist," was widely circulated on social media and news outlets.

The Public Defender's Office has filed an urgent motion with the Tel Aviv District Court seeking an immediate injunction against the IPS. They argue the release of the video constitutes a severe violation of Zarfati's privacy and her right to a fair trial, emphasizing she is still presumed innocent. The office stated that the "deplorable, degrading, and unjustified treatment" shown in the video exemplifies a severe crisis within the prison system and that its public dissemination, seemingly with the minister's backing, indicates a deep breakdown.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir defended the IPS's actions, stating, "The party in the prisons is over, even for criminal murderers." He accused the Public Defender's Office of consistently advocating for leniency towards prisoners and criticized them for remaining silent on other issues while defending Zarfati. Ben-Gvir asserted that the IPS was simply treating Zarfati according to the law after she allegedly disrupted order and disrespected guards.

The video depicts Zarfati being searched by masked guards, including an examination of her personal belongings and feminine hygiene products. The Public Defender's Office is demanding that the IPS Commissioner respond immediately and restore the organization to operate according to professional standards expected of a state body within the law enforcement system.
