Ed Sheeran Pledges $2 Million for Palestinian Humanitarian Aid Amid Controversy

British singer Ed Sheeran has committed to donating $2 million for humanitarian aid to Palestinians, a move that clarifies his stance after previously stating he did not want to take sides in the conflict. The revelation came from Jewish billionaire Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, who stated Sheeran contacted him to request a matching $2 million donation for Gaza. Kraft agreed to match the sum, declaring, "I believe every life is precious."

Sheeran's pledge follows the controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore, who was removed from Sheeran's tour after publicly advocating for Palestinians. Four other opening acts also withdrew in protest. Sheeran himself had expressed being "horrified by the conflict" but aimed to avoid using his stage for political statements. However, his explanations did not quell the backlash.

Several artists, including Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, and Sheeran's own backing band, announced they would not continue on the tour, expressing solidarity with Macklemore and Palestinians. Despite the significant disruption, Sheeran's tour is expected to proceed, with his next scheduled performance in Philadelphia on Saturday.

Sheeran reportedly clarified that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by tour producers after several venues indicated they would not host shows featuring the rapper. The singer is now faced with the challenge of replacing his entire lineup and securing a new backing band, all under the shadow of Macklemore's controversial exit. Any potential replacements could risk being labeled anti-Palestinian, potentially complicating their careers in the United States.
