Prominent Rabbi Meir Shalom Hai Tangy Dies at 75

Rabbi Meir Shalom Hai Tangy, a leading rabbi in the community of Tel Zion and a close associate of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, passed away on Thursday at the age of 75. He was the head of the "Mikdash Shlomo" institutions and was known for his dedication to Torah study and teaching.

Born in Morocco to Rabbi Melloul Tangy, Rabbi Tangy immigrated to Israel with his family in his youth, settling in Afula. Despite early challenges and a lack of understanding from his surroundings, he pursued religious studies with great devotion, first at a yeshiva in Ofakim and later at the "Shearit Yosef" yeshiva in Be'er Yaakov, where he studied under Rabbi Nissim Toledano. He was also a devoted student of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, regularly attending his lectures.

Over 50 years ago, Rabbi Tangy founded the "Mikdash Shlomo" yeshiva and kollel, dedicating his life to disseminating Torah, teaching Halakha, and mentoring numerous students. He was also a spiritual guide for his community.

Approximately 15 years ago, Rabbi Tangy was instrumental in bringing the remains of his ancestors, the revered Kabbalists Rabbi Shlomo and Rabbi Avraham Tangy, from Morocco to Israel. Their bodies were found remarkably preserved after 80 years. Their reburial in Israel was a significant event, attended by prominent rabbis, including Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who encouraged the public to visit their graves for prayer and blessings.

In recent times, Rabbi Tangy's health had declined, and prayers were offered for his recovery. He is survived by 15 children and a large family who continue to follow his path of Torah and reverence. His funeral procession departed from Tel Zion on Thursday morning and proceeded to Jerusalem for burial.
