The story · English

Rabbi Avraham Meir Hershkowitz, a prominent Torah scholar and educator, has passed away in Modiin Illit at the age of 87, following a period of suffering which he bore with acceptance. He was known for his dedication to Torah study and for nurturing many students both in Israel and abroad.

Born to Rabbi David Hershkowitz, founder of the "Beit Yechiel Meir" study hall, Rabbi Avraham Meir Hershkowitz married the daughter of Rabbi Yitzchak Yacobson. For decades, he devoted himself to Torah scholarship with immense devotion. He served as a lecturer at the Ponovezh Yeshiva for Youth and at the "Neshamat Israel" Yeshiva in Paris, France, where he influenced numerous students. He also taught at the "Heichal Yosef" Yeshiva in Modiin Illit.

Colleagues and students remember him as a man of integrity, purity, and kindness, who deeply respected his teachers and was always ready to help others. In his final years, he suffered from illness, which he accepted with grace.

He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His son, Rabbi Aryeh Leib Hershkowitz, leads the "Heichal Yosef" Yeshiva, and his brother, Rabbi Elchanan Hershkowitz, heads the "Beit Yechiel" study hall and its kollels.

The funeral procession began at his home in Modiin Illit on Tuesday, September 26th, and proceeded to Jerusalem's Shagar Funeral Home before burial at Har HaMenuchot. The family will observe Shiva (mourning) at his home in Modiin Illit until the holiday begins. Additional family members will sit Shiva in Bnei Brak and Jerusalem.
