Rabbi Avraham Menachem, Esteemed Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Migdal HaEmek, Passes Away at 79

Kikar HaShabbatReligious
Translated & summarized from Kikar HaShabbat by baba
The story · English

Rabbi Avraham Menachem, the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Migdal HaEmek and founder of the "Ner HaTzafon" institutions and the small yeshiva "Nezer HaTorah," passed away at the age of 79. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, he immigrated to Israel in 1962 with his family, settling in Migdal HaEmek. He was renowned as a leading Torah scholar in northern Israel and a dedicated educator who significantly contributed to Jewish education and religious life in the city.

Rabbi Menachem studied at the "Tiferet Yisrael" yeshiva in Haifa under Rabbi Dov Meir Rubman and began teaching before his marriage at the request of Rabbi Nissim Tolidano. After marrying the daughter of Rabbi Yehuda Assouline, a prominent rabbi from southern Morocco, he continued his studies and maintained close ties with his mentors. He was deeply involved in encouraging children of immigrants from Eastern communities to pursue Torah study and personally helped many young men gain admission to prestigious yeshivas such as Ponevezh and Kol Torah.

He collaborated closely with Rabbi Yitzchak David Grossman and the "Migdal Or" institutions to establish a comprehensive network of educational frameworks in Migdal HaEmek, including daycares, kindergartens, a Talmud Torah, the "Nezer HaTorah" yeshiva, and a kollel. Rabbi Menachem served as acting religious leader during the illness of his predecessor, Rabbi Meir Yona, and was officially appointed as the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Migdal HaEmek after Rabbi Yona's passing in 1984. His funeral procession departed from the "Ner HaTzafon" study hall to the local cemetery for burial.

Rabbi Menachem is remembered as a towering figure in Torah scholarship and community leadership who left a lasting spiritual legacy in northern Israel.
