Israel and Morocco Agree to Upgrade Diplomatic Ties to Embassies

Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi met in New York with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Pompeo for a trilateral summit aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations. During the meeting, the parties committed to several steps, most notably upgrading their respective representative offices to full embassies and appointing ambassadors. This move signifies a significant elevation of diplomatic status between the two nations.

Beyond the diplomatic upgrade, Israel and Morocco agreed to finalize agreements by the end of 2026 concerning investment protection and the prevention of double taxation. These economic accords are designed to facilitate mutual investments and foster business ties. Additionally, direct flight routes will be expanded, with Moroccan airlines set to begin operating on these routes in the coming weeks. The summit also established a framework for reciprocal visits by senior officials from both countries in the upcoming months.

The meeting occurred one day after an event hosted by Ambassador Pompeo to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, attended by representatives from Israel, the U.S., the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Kazakhstan. Israel expressed gratitude to the United States for its role as a mediator and for its assistance in bolstering ties with Rabat.

Foreign Minister Ashkenazi stated following the meeting, "The friendship between the Moroccan and Jewish peoples has deep roots and a glorious history. The declaration we signed today details practical ways to upgrade the ties between Israel and Morocco for the benefit of both peoples, and we will work diligently towards its implementation."
