Israel and Morocco Agree to Upgrade Diplomatic Ties, Expand Flights

Israel and Morocco have agreed to a series of steps to elevate their bilateral relations, including upgrading their diplomatic missions to embassies and appointing ambassadors. The agreement was reached during a trilateral meeting in New York involving Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing diplomatic representation, with the goal of establishing full embassies and appointing ambassadors. Additionally, Israel and Morocco committed to finalizing two economic agreements by the end of 2026, focusing on investment protection and the prevention of double taxation. The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated these measures aim to facilitate mutual investments and bolster economic and trade ties.

The agreement also includes expanding direct flights between the two countries, with Moroccan airlines set to operate flights in the coming weeks. High-level reciprocal visits are planned for the upcoming months.

The meeting occurred a day after an event hosted by Ambassador Waltz to mark the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, which included representatives from the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Israel, and the United States. Minister Ashkenazi highlighted the deep-rooted friendship between the Moroccan and Jewish peoples, stating that the agreement outlines practical steps to advance relations for the benefit of both nations.
