Police Commissioner Considers Appointing New Spokesperson Amid Ministry Disputes

Police Commissioner Danny Levy is reportedly considering the appointment of Superintendent Aryeh Doron as the head of the police's spokesperson unit. Doron would replace Superintendent Lior Abudraham, who is set to retire from the police force. Abudraham's name was linked to a controversy approximately three months ago involving associates of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, after a senior female officer filed a complaint alleging sexual harassment.

The potential appointment of Doron comes amid ongoing disagreements between Commissioner Levy and Minister Ben-Gvir regarding appointments within the police force. While discussions on the matter were scheduled to take place about ten days prior, Ben-Gvir reportedly canceled them, stating that appointments should only be made after the upcoming elections. However, sources indicate the core of the dispute lies in the identities of individuals slated for key positions, including the head of the prosecution department and the deputy legal advisor.

Despite Ben-Gvir's strong opposition, an initial round of police appointments was completed on the same evening, with Commissioner Levy deciding to appoint Superintendent Tamar Liberty as deputy legal advisor. In response, Ben-Gvir escalated the conflict by deciding to withhold approximately 300 million shekels in budgets allocated for the police.
