Police Spokesperson Appointment Blocked by National Security Minister

The Inspector General of the Israel Police, Dani Levi, is reportedly unable to appoint Superintendent Aryeh Doron as head of the police's spokesperson unit, and promote him to the rank of Chief Superintendent, due to a boycott of appointments by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. In addition to Ben-Gvir's opposition, Doron faces a disciplinary proceeding that could hinder his promotion. The police recently reported Doron to the High Court of Justice following remarks he made about Democratic Party chairman Yair Golan. This disciplinary process, which the Inspector General reportedly does not find significant, must conclude before the promotion can be approved.

Doron's potential appointment comes after the previous head of the spokesperson unit, Chief Superintendent Lior Abudraham, recently retired from the police amid the Yaacobi-Shoshan-Abudraham affair, in which the three were investigated. Legal sources stated that a High Court ruling obligates the police spokesperson.

Despite the unlikelihood of appointments moving forward without the minister's approval, Levi intends to hold a discussion on officer placements this Thursday and continue the process of appointing station and district commanders. This move is seen as a symbolic gesture by Levi, expressing appreciation for officers within the police force.
