Police Spokesperson Promoted Amid Disciplinary Probe and Ministry Disputes

Police Commissioner Danny Levi has promoted Superintendent Aryeh Doron to head the Police Spokesperson Unit, a move that will see Doron promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner. This appointment comes just days after Doron became the subject of a disciplinary review following controversial remarks he made about Yair Golan, chairman of the Democrats party, whom Doron called "one of the greatest enemies of Israel" in an interview. The decision to promote Doron has sparked further debate, especially given his recent public statements.

This is not the first time Doron's comments have caused controversy. In July, he stated in an interview that the police would obey whoever the law requires them to obey, in response to a question about whether the police would follow the government or the Supreme Court in case of a conflict. Police Commissioner Levi later clarified that the police would implement any Supreme Court ruling without hesitation, emphasizing the force's apolitical nature.

The promotion also occurs amidst a significant rift between National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Commissioner Levi concerning police appointments. Ben-Gvir has stated he will not approve officer appointments until after the elections, while Levi continues to advance them. The two are also in disagreement over hundreds of millions of shekels held up within the National Security Ministry, with the Commissioner reportedly considering legal action to release the funds.
