Canadian-Israeli Man Freed From Kurdish Prison After 11 Years
A 31-year-old Canadian-Israeli man of Kurdish descent, Ben Hasin, has been released from a prison in Kurdistan after serving 11 years and narrowly avoiding a death sentence. He is expected to return to Israel in the coming days. The death penalty against Hasin was dropped following a reconciliation agreement reached last year. Hasin was imprisoned for causing the death of a Kurdish man.
International efforts to secure his release were spearheaded by lawyer Alan Loewin and a team of activists from the United States, including Hershel Gatdiner, Shimon Relanitzky, Meir Zvi Toiber, and Shlomo Lando.
