Israeli Prison Fugitive Captured at Ben Gurion Airport After Three Years Abroad

The Israeli Prison Service's 'Barkai' unit apprehended a fugitive prisoner who fled Israel in 2021, about three months before he was due to begin serving his sentence. The fugitive returned to Israel and was immediately arrested upon landing at Ben Gurion Airport on Wednesday. The arrest followed a security report from airport authorities, and after coordination with the police, the detainee was transferred to the Rishon Lezion police station for interrogation. Subsequently, the Barkai unit took custody of the prisoner and moved him to Tel Aviv detention center to continue serving his sentence.

The fugitive had evaded capture for three years despite numerous efforts by authorities. The Barkai unit, part of the Prison Service's Alternatives to Incarceration and Supervision Division, emphasized its ongoing commitment to locating fugitives and ensuring they serve their sentences, reinforcing prison governance. This case adds to a series of successful captures of escaped prisoners in recent years, including a recent arrest in France of an inmate who escaped by hiding in a laundry bag and a U.S. fugitive caught after scaling prison walls following a multi-day manhunt.
