Shas MK Accuses Israeli Judiciary of Political Persecution
Member of Knesset Michael Malchieli of the Shas party has accused Israel's Supreme Court and the Attorney General's office of political persecution following the court's rejection of a petition by Shas. The petition sought to reinstate study days honoring Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the late spiritual leader of the Sephardic Haredi party.
In an interview with Kikar HaShabbat, Malchieli stated that the judiciary is incapable of tolerating a "respectable gathering" for Rabbi Yosef. He asserted that the court's decision was politically motivated and aimed at suppressing the memory and legacy of the revered rabbi.
"We cannot extinguish the candle of Maran," Malchieli declared, referencing Rabbi Yosef by his honorific title. He emphasized that Shas would not be deterred by the ruling and would continue to honor their spiritual leader. The rejection of the petition signifies a setback for Shas's efforts to formally commemorate Rabbi Yosef through public events.
