Supreme Court Rejects Shas Party's Appeal to Hold Memorial Event
Israel's High Court of Justice on Wednesday dismissed an urgent petition filed by the Shas party seeking to overturn a decision by the Attorney General to cancel a state-sponsored memorial event for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. The court noted that the petition had become moot, as the Ministry of Religious Affairs had already announced the cancellation of the event.
During the hearing, the Director-General of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Yehuda Avidan, informed the judges that holding the event in two to three weeks was not feasible. The court ultimately ruled to reject the petition, stating it was theoretical given the event's cancellation.
The judges emphasized that their decision was specific to this particular event at the International Convention Center in Jerusalem and did not set a broader precedent.
