Shas MK Accuses Attorney General of Criminality Over Canceled Memorial Event

A Knesset Member from the Shas party has launched a severe verbal attack against the Attorney General, accusing her of criminal behavior and attempting to erase the legacy of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, a prominent Sephardic rabbi. The controversy stems from the Attorney General's directive to limit and ultimately cancel a memorial event for Rabbi Yosef. MK Yinon Azulai stated in a radio interview that the Attorney General is acting as a criminal who is disregarding the law. He argued that instead of a complete cancellation, solutions could have been found, such as limiting political figures' participation. Azulai suggested the Attorney General's actions are driven by a desire to erase Rabbi Yosef's heritage, comparing the situation to allowing other political events while canceling this memorial. He emphasized Rabbi Yosef's broad public appeal, noting that both religious and secular individuals miss him and feel his influence. Shas is reportedly petitioning against the Attorney General regarding the cancellation of the memorial service.
