Shas MK Slams High Court Over Banned Rabbi Ovadia Yosef Memorial Event
Member of Knesset (MK) Michael Malchieli of the Shas party has sharply criticized the Supreme Court and the Attorney General following a ruling that prevented a memorial event for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the spiritual leader of the Sephardic Haredi community. Malchieli accused the judges of being "dragged along by the Attorney General in a constant pursuit of the identity of Rabbi Ovadia's legacy."
The Knesset member stated that the central event could not be held in a reduced capacity, saying, "We will not hold the Rabbi's central event in a small place." He announced that in response to the court's decision, thousands of memorial gatherings, known as 'hillulot,' would instead be held across the country.
"Our response will be thousands of hillulot all over the country. No court and no Attorney General will extinguish Rabbi Ovadia's candle," Malchieli declared, emphasizing that Shas would not relinquish the Rabbi's heritage. The original event was reportedly canceled due to unspecified reasons, leading to the court's intervention.
