Thailand Launches Probe Into Chabad House Activities After Event Cancellation

The governor of Phuket, Chuthatip Karnsombut, has ordered an investigation into the activities of the Chabad House in Patong. Authorities are tasked with examining land documents, acquisition methods, usage and construction permits, and commercial licenses associated with the complex. The probe will also scrutinize the identities of shareholders in companies linked to the Chabad House's operations and determine any connection to a company involved in establishing a Jewish cemetery in Thailand. The authorities have been given seven days to complete the investigation.

The inquiry follows the last-minute cancellation of a Rosh Hashanah dinner at the Patong Chabad House, which was planned for approximately 2,000 Israeli travelers. The cancellation occurred due to a pro-Palestinian demonstration that lasted for hours in the area. Concurrently, authorities are investigating business ties between companies associated with the Chabad complex and the firm involved in the cemetery project. Officials emphasized that this is currently only an examination and not an assertion that any wrongdoing has occurred.

Rabbi Nehemia Wilhelm, the Chabad emissary in Thailand, stated in response that "Our Chabad Houses are completely legal in all respects. We are very careful to adhere to the laws of the country, respect the local authorities and the citizens of Thailand, and therefore we have full confidence that the matters currently being examined will be investigated objectively and will reveal that everything is in order." He added, "We have been in Thailand for 30 years, and throughout these years we have personally experienced the special hospitality of the Thai people, the mutual respect, and the peaceful coexistence here among people of all religions and nationalities. We have always felt respected, and we have great appreciation for the Thai people and the kingdom's authorities."
