Thai Authorities Probe Chabad Center in Phuket Amid Foreign Business Scrutiny

Thai authorities have intensified their oversight of foreign activities in the country, with a Chabad center in Patong, Phuket, now under a comprehensive investigation. Phuket Governor Chuthatin Karnsombut ordered a thorough review of the center's operations, with findings due within seven days. The probe will examine land ownership, acquisition methods, building and usage permits, and commercial licenses for businesses operating at the site.

Investigators are also scrutinizing the center's shareholder structure and its potential connection to a project for a Jewish cemetery in Thailand, reportedly held by three Israeli citizens who have acquired Thai citizenship. Authorities are looking into whether local shareholders are being used as fronts for foreign ownership, which would violate Thai law.

This is not the first time the Patong Chabad center, which holds permits for a restaurant, club, and prayer spaces, has faced scrutiny. On July 26, law enforcement and security agencies raided the premises to examine its operations and donation sources.

The current investigation was prompted by a complaint from a local group to the governor, protesting the holding of Rosh Hashanah events in Patong due to security concerns stemming from the war in the Middle East. However, the Thai government emphasized that it has not determined that Chabad or its personnel have broken any laws, stating the investigation is for law enforcement purposes and not targeted at any specific religion or nationality.

The Phuket inquiry is part of a broader operation on the island examining thousands of companies with foreign involvement. Meanwhile, a similar investigation into a cemetery project in Koh Samui was recently closed due to insufficient evidence. In response to the tensions, Israel's ambassador to Thailand stated she is working to make Chabad centers accessible to local residents to alleviate concerns and strengthen community ties.
