Chabad Envoy in Thailand Assures Compliance Amid Phuket Investigation

Following an order from the governor of Phuket, Thailand, for a comprehensive investigation into the activities of Chabad in Patong, a Chabad envoy to Thailand stated that authorities are increasing checks on foreign activities to ensure legal compliance. Rabbi Nechemia Wilhelm, the Chabad envoy, explained that these checks include matters related to the Jewish community and Chabad centers. The investigation, ordered by Phuket Governor Chuthatip Chuthatip, focuses on land ownership, usage permits, construction approvals, and commercial licenses associated with the Chabad center. Authorities have been given seven days to submit their findings. This probe follows the last-minute cancellation of a Rosh Hashanah dinner planned for 2,000 Israeli travelers at the center, which occurred after a pro-Palestinian demonstration took place in the area. Rabbi Wilhelm emphasized that Chabad has been operating in Thailand for 30 years, always adhering to Thai law, and is fully cooperating with the authorities. He distinguished the official investigation from what he described as hostile campaigns by private actors against Israelis, Jews, and Chabad centers on social media and in protests, stating these actors do not represent the Thai people or kingdom. Thai authorities clarified that the investigation is currently a review of documents and corporate ties, not an accusation of wrongdoing, and is not targeted at any specific nationality, religion, or community. They stressed it aims to ensure land holdings and activities comply with Thai law. Rabbi Wilhelm reiterated his confidence in the Thai people and authorities, citing 30 years of positive relations and mutual respect, and expressed full trust that the current review will confirm everything is in order.
