Chabad Rabbi in Bangkok Welcomes New Secular Israeli Center on Koh Phangan
Rabbi Nechemia Wilhelm, the Chabad emissary in Bangkok, responded positively to the announcement of a new secular Israeli center called "The Secular House" opening near the Chabad house on Koh Phangan. The new center aims to provide an alternative space for Israeli travelers who prefer a non-religious environment. In an interview with Channel 12, Rabbi Wilhelm described the initiative as a compliment, saying it shows others want to emulate Chabad's model. He emphasized that Chabad has been serving Jewish travelers in Thailand for 30 years under the Lubavitcher Rebbe's mission, welcoming all Jews regardless of their level of observance.
Rabbi Wilhelm expressed openness to cooperation, stating, "We will certainly welcome them with open arms and be happy to help." He added that darkness is dispelled by light, not conflict, and he is confident that the new secular center will eventually join in spreading positivity. He also noted that the backlash against the new center does not reflect the true spirit of the Jewish people, suggesting that those uninterested in religious settings have many other options and that opposition to the secular house is shallow and unlikely to succeed either in Thailand or elsewhere.
The secular group "Free Seculars" announced plans to open "The Secular House" near the Chabad house on Koh Phangan, offering Shabbat meals without traditional Kiddush, social gatherings, and workshops. Rabbi Wilhelm expressed gratitude for the renewed attention and messages of thanks from people who have been helped by Chabad over the years.
