Thailand Survey Shows Strong Support for Stricter Enforcement Against Israelis Amid Rising Tensions

A new survey in Thailand reveals widespread public support for stricter law enforcement targeting Israeli tourists, amidst growing anti-Israel sentiment. The poll, conducted among 1,410 participants across Bangkok and five other provinces, found that over 76% of respondents had encountered reports of problematic behavior or legal violations by Israeli visitors. Of those exposed to such reports, nearly 77.5% favored stricter enforcement, while approximately 45% suggested shortening Israeli tourist visas and 38% called for increased embassy involvement.

Key allegations cited include disrespect for local laws (71%), condescending attitudes (46%), and using local citizens as "straw men" to hold businesses and land illegally (31%). These findings emerge following a protest outside the Israeli embassy in Bangkok, where demonstrators called for boycotting Israel and intensifying enforcement against Israeli businesses in Phuket and Koh Phangan.

In response to the escalating tensions, Israel's Deputy Ambassador to Thailand, Rami Taflitzky, released an unusual explanatory video in Thai. He emphasized that the embassy takes the issue seriously and is cooperating fully with Thai authorities. This comes as Israel experiences record numbers of visitors, with over 277,000 Israelis visiting Thailand since the beginning of the year.

The tangible impact of these tensions was felt in Phuket, where a central Rosh Hashanah dinner at the Chabad House was abruptly canceled at the last minute. An urgent message sent to invitees stated, "Due to the demand of Israeli security officials, we regretfully must cancel the event. Please do not approach the area, demonstrators may be violent." Chabad representatives noted that other holiday prayers and meals proceeded as scheduled.
