Israel Strikes Hamas Rafah Brigade Commander in Gaza
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency announced Tuesday evening that a senior Hamas operative was targeted in an airstrike in southern Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz subsequently confirmed that the target was the commander of Hamas's Rafah brigade, who had replaced Mohammed Shabanah the previous year. A senior security official indicated that the assassination appeared to have been successful. Netanyahu and Katz stated, "The IDF attacked the commander of the Hamas Rafah brigade, after earlier this week the commander of the Khan Yunis brigade and other senior figures in the organization were eliminated." They added, "Our message is clear: no terrorist is immune, and Hamas will not be in Gaza. We strengthen the IDF and the Shin Bet, who are acting with determination to remove threats and protect Israeli citizens."
Palestinian reports indicated that the strikes in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, resulted in two deaths and 14 injuries.
